OROKAWA BAY | 1.5HR RETURN
This beautiful walk is a highlight for visitors and locals alike, offering a perfect mix of coastal scenery and native bush. Along the track, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, dramatic headlands, and a bird’s eye view over the white sands of Waihī Beach. The path weaves through lush forest filled with native trees like pōhutukawa, kauri, puriri, and nikau palms, and is alive with the sound of native birdlife. The changing landscape -from shaded bush to open cliffside – keeps the walk interesting and rewarding throughout. At the end, you’ll reach the breathtaking Orokawa Bay, a secluded spot fringed with pōhutukawa and known for its clear blue water and peaceful atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to lay out a picnic, relax under the trees, or simply enjoy the untouched beauty of the bay.
To reach Orokawa Bay, start at the northern end of Waihī Beach, just past the surf lifesaving club, where you’ll find the entrance to the coastal track. The walk takes around 45 minutes each way and follows a well-formed but hilly path that winds around the headland through native bush. While it’s an easy to moderate track, sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Be aware that access can be affected by high tide or strong swell, so it’s best to plan your walk during calm, low-tide conditions. There are no facilities along the way or at the bay itself, so bring water, snacks, and anything else you may need before setting off.
FOREST LOOP VIA TRIG TRAIL | 1.5HR RETURN
The Forest Loop Trail via the Trig Trail is a rewarding 1.5-hour walk that features a mix of native bush, open ridgelines, and sweeping coastal views. The track climbs steadily through regenerating forest to a panoramic lookout at the Trig, offering stunning views over Waihī Beach and the surrounding coastline. From there, the loop continues across forested ridges with varied terrain and even higher vantage points. The walk includes a significant number of stairs, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended – don’t forget to bring water.
To get to the Forest Loop via the Trig Trail, drive up Pacific Road and turn left at the top onto Reservoir Loop Road to reach the Water Reservoir car park. This well-marked trailhead offers plentiful parking, a public toilet, and a water filling station. The route begins from the reservoir loop, branching off onto the Trig Trail, then ascends through native bush – complete with steps and steep sections – toward the panoramic trig lookout. From there, the forest loop continues across ridgelines before descending back to the car park.
KARANGAHAKE WINDOWS WALK | 1HR RETURN
The Karangahake Windows Walk is a captivating mix of natural beauty and gold mining history, set in the dramatic Karangahake Gorge. This one-hour loop takes you across swing bridges, through dark mining tunnels, and along clifftop windows that overlook the rushing river below. Along the way, you’ll pass remnants of old tram tracks and mining relics, making it feel like an adventure through time. With its mix of tunnels, views, and historic charm, it’s a must-do for explorers of all ages – just don’t forget a torch for the tunnels!
To get to the Karangahake Windows Walk from Waihī Beach, take a 25-minute drive inland via Waihī and along State Highway 2 toward Paeroa. The walk starts from the Karangahake Reserve car park, which is well signposted and located just off the highway. There you’ll find public toilets, picnic tables, and plenty of parking. It’s an easy spot to access and a great base for exploring the gorge. The walk itself begins with a swing bridge and leads into old mining tunnels carved into the cliffs, offering a unique mix of history and adventure. Don’t forget to bring a torch for the tunnels!
KARANGAHAKE RAIL TUNNEL LOOP | 1.5HR RETURN
The Karangahake Tunnel Loop is a scenic and historic walk that takes you deep into the heart of the gorge. This 60–90 minute loop follows a former railway line alongside the Ohinemuri River and leads you through the impressive 1.1 km Karangahake Rail Tunnel – complete with moody lighting and dramatic echoes. Along the way, you’ll cross suspension bridges, pass old mining relics, and take in the stunning views of the gorge and native bush. It’s a gentle, family-friendly walk with a unique mix of adventure and history – bring a torch for extra fun in the tunnel!
To reach the Karangahake Tunnel Loop from Waihī Beach, drive inland via Waihī and take State Highway 2 toward Paeroa – it’s about a 25-minute drive. The walk starts from the Karangahake Reserve car park, which is well signposted just off the highway. Facilities include public toilets and picnic tables, making it a great spot to stop and explore. The trail is clearly marked and begins with a suspension bridge leading into the historic tunnel, then loops back along the river to the car park.
