What was your vision for The Secret Garden, and how did it come to life?

“Our vision for the secret garden was to bring a little bit of long beach California to Waihi Beach, NZ. So we started with the vision of authentic Mexican street food and a Tiki bar . Then added in the sparkles like live music, DJs, Comedy shows, Drag shows, story and poetry evenings, workshops and more – so there’s always something happening! We try to keep most of our entertainment is free and when we get bigger acts we have Koha entry or ticket sales. We’re committed to bringing fun , unusual and exciting entertainment to the town, something for everyone “

How did you choose the tropical and playful vibe for your space?

“When I started the secret garden about 18 years ago it was Balinese themed so we just incorporated that into our new vision. We always say it’s like Bali, Hawaii and Mexico had a baby.”

What’s a hidden gem on your menu that people need to try?

“Our hidden gem is the honey margarita or los besos margarita for those who like a kick! And the chicken tortilla soup is always a winner – especially in the cold months.”

What’s your favourite part about running a hospitality business in a beachside town?

“The locals and families that support us. We are five owners and most of us have young kids, so it was really important to have a family friendly European restaurant vibe.”

If you could throw a themed party for the whole town, what would it be?

” A giant carnival or Dia de los Muertos street party like they have in Europe or Mexico. The streets are flooded with people dancing and partying and lots of street food and colour everywhere! It’s so alive with life.”
