Behind Hey Maker with Lisa

Going by the name of Hey Maker Studio, talented Māori artist, Lisa Billing creates original artworks, limited edition prints, and bespoke commission. Lisa’s work is inspired by her love of tropical landscapes and the strength and beauty of women, expressed through vibrant, tonal colour palettes and layered textures that evoke emotion and storytelling.

“I work with acrylic paints and use loose brush strokes painted over many layers. It creates texture through my pieces.”

What’s been one of your favourite moments or wins since starting Hey Maker?

“Probably being asked to have my work stocked in New Zealand and Australia. It felt like a significant leap for me and one I am proud of.”

What was the first piece you ever sold or showed off, and do you remember how that felt?

“During lockdown 2020 I started painting to pass the time at home. I gave away free prints files of that painting and that’s essentially where my art career started.”

Where’s your go-to local spot when you need a creative reset?

“Always the beach. It’s easy to take it for granted when you live here, but I always feel content and reset after spending time there.”

What medium or technique are you loving right now?

“I work with acrylic paints and use loose brush strokes painted over many layers. It creates texture through my pieces and allows the beginning stages to peek through. If I’m feeling like it needs even more, I’ll add in plaster or another medium.”

What’s one must-do or must-visit experience you always recommend to someone new to Waihī Beach?

“Definitely the trig walk, short and sharp with an iconic view from the top. Or if you’re after more of a challenge, carry on with the trig loop track.”
