Day One: Arrival, Exploring & Coastal Fun
Check in and settle into your home base. Choose from one of these family-friendly spots:
• Sea Esta Lodge: Colourful, quirky and Mexican-themed, this self contained lodge sleeps up to 16 and is packed with personality.
• Tasman Holiday Park, Just steps from the sand, this beachside holiday park has cabins, motel units, powered sites and a playground.
• Bowentown Beach Holiday Park, Ocean on one side, harbour on the other – this spot is perfect for calm swims and nature walks.
Beach time and sandcastle building: Walk straight down to Waihī Beach for your first adventure. The northern end is patrolled in summer – perfect for beginner swimmers. Bring a bucket and spade, and let the beachy fun begin.
Lunch in the village: Refuel with one of these tasty spots:
Waihī Beach Bakery: Grab pies, filled rolls, and kid-approved treats. Rabbit Moon Café: Fresh, wholesome meals in a chill setting in Waihi Beach Village. The Secret Garden: Vibrant, quirky, and full of character.
Afternoon mini golf + beach playground: Try your luck at mini golf next to The Khaya – an 18-hole course full of fun challenges. Afterwards, swing by Brighton Reserve’s beachside playground or Island View Reserve for climbing and zipline fun.
Dinner time options: Choose from easy, delicious eats: Secret Garden: A lush, tropical setting with fresh, wholesome meals and a relaxed atmosphere. Crazy Tandoor Indian: Packed with bold flavours that adventurous kids will love, this classic Indian takeaway is perfect for a casual, tasty meal by the sea.

Day Two: Nature Walks, Wildlife & Local Flavours
Start the day right with breakfast: Flatwhite Café: On the beach with epic views and big breakfasts. The Beach Road Deli: Friendly service and a great cabinet selection. DIY brekkie at your cabin or campsite for a relaxed start.
Morning walk – The Dam Trail: This hidden local trail begins at the end of Pacific Road. Easy and flat, it’s perfect for little legs. Cross bridges, spot eels and ducks, and follow the shaded bush path to a historic dam.
Lunch picnic at Island View Reserve: Pack your own or pick up goodies from one of the many eateries around town. Then let the kids run wild on the playground while you relax on the grass.
Afternoon adventure – Shelly Bay or Cave Bay: Head to the southern end of Waihī Beach and take the short scenic track from Bowentown to Shelly Bay or Cave Bay. These tucked-away spots are perfect for a family explore – think rock pools, shells, and calm waters ideal for a paddle. The short walks are manageable for most ages, and the bays offer a peaceful slice of nature away from the crowds.
Dinner picnic on the beach: Order a platter box from The Platter Board Waihī a few days ahead of time, or grab some Fish & Chips from the Seaside store, then bring a blanket and enjoy dinner at sunset. Beach spots like the Waihī Surf Club area or Bowentown are great for relaxed evening picnics.
Evening games & stargazing: Back at your accommodation, wind down with some classic holiday games. Spot constellations, toast marshmallows (if your spot allows), or just chat about the day’s adventures.

Day Three: Bikes, Surf & Sweet Goodbyes
Breakfast to fuel the day: Surf Shack Eatery: A family favourite with a big, diverse menu that’s perfect to kickstart your day – or your accommodation kitchen if you’re keen to keep it simple.
Bike ride to Bowentown: Follow the footpath or estuary-side cycle route from Waihī Beach to Bowentown. It’s mostly flat, scenic, and offers plenty of stops to explore along the way. Pack water and helmets!
Optional surf lesson or beach splash: Older kids and adults can book a beginner surf lesson with Waihī Beach Surf School, or simply hire boards and give it a go. The main beach is ideal for learning.
After Lunch enjoy one last beach stop – Choose either Anzac Bay, calm, safe and perfect for little ones. or let the family cool off one last time at the main beach.
Depart Waihī Beach Say farewell – for now! You’ll be back before you know it.
