HISTORIC CHARM AMIDST SCENIC GARDENS

Athenree Homestead is located on a Western Bay of Plenty District Council Reserve at 360 Athenree Road, Athenree, is maintained by the Athenree Homestead Charitable Trust and is run entirely by volunteers.

It was built by Irish settler/pioneers Hugh and Adela Stewart in 1879 and was a working farmhouse for 30 years up to their departure in 1906. It was then lived in by successive owners until 1952, after which it deteriorated. From 1999 it was completely rebuilt and is open to the public January to March every Sunday from 11am to 3pm and April to December the first Sunday of the month 11am to 3pm. Entry by $5 donation. The Homestead property includes the re-located historic Athenree Railway Station from which morning and afternoon teas are served on Open Days.

How to get there

Athenree Homestead is a short 10-minute drive southwest of Waihī Beach village along Seaforth Road. Parking is available onsite. The area is also accessible by bike or on foot via local walking trails connecting to the estuary and nearby reserves.
